Recovering alcoholics and drug abusers were unable to find affordable housing in Lynchburg and therefore struggled to get jobs and be able to put their lives back together. In 1992, NLSI opened The Gateway, a transitional living program for homeless men. Later, the program narrowed its focus to homeless men also in recovery from substance abuse. NLSI and The Gateway provide homeless men in recovery from alcohol and/or drug abuse with a safe, supportive and accountable environment in which they can rebuild their lives.
