Class of Housing/Services: Emergency and Transitional Housing.

General Information:
Emergency and Transitional Housing The shelter's purpose is to assist the homeless in the transition to permanent housing. The three goals of the transitional program are: 1. To help participants obtain and remain in permanent housing. 2. To help participants increase skills and / or income. 3. To help participants achieve greater self determination. Emergency and Transitional housing is available for up to two years. Residents are provided with a variety of LifeSkills classes, under the direction of Case Management. Eligibility Requirements: An individual or family who is living on the street or in an emergency shelter, or who would be living on the street or an emergency shelter without the assistance of the Emergency and/or Transitional Programs. Only single women and families are served. Single men are referred to a local men's shelter. Homelessness is the only criterion for services. A person is considered homeless only when he/she resides in a place not meant for human habitation; such as cars, parks, abandoned buildings; is being evicted within a week from a private dwelling and lacks the resources to obtain alternate housing; or is being discharged from an institution such as a mental health facility or jail and lacks the resources to obtain housing. Saint Stephen Cathedral Soup Kitchen The Kitchen opens at 8:00 AM for doughnuts and coffee and serves hot meals at 11:00 am Monday through Saturday. • The Kitchen opens at 12:00 noon on Sunday for doughnuts and coffee. A hot meal is served at 2:00 pm. • Meals served 365 days per year.

Transitional housing is affordable supportive housing designed to provide housing and appropriate support services to persons who are homeless or who are close to homelessness. The transition is to help them be more self sufficient to move towards independent living on their own. Transitional housing locations are oftentimes called Halfway Houses. The naming of the two (Halfway House OR Transitional House) is oftentimes interchangeable.

Many Transitional Housing programs are subsidized and are income based. Income based transitional housing generally charges 30% of your income for rent when you do have income. Contact the transitional housing facility to see if this applies.

Services provided at transitional housing facilities varies from substance abuse treatment, to psychological assistance, job training, domestic violence assistance, etc. The assistance provided varies, but it is generally affordable and low cost housing. Read the descriptions of each of the transitional living locations for more detailed information. Transitional housing facilities also may or may not assist with alcohol and/or drug substance abuse treatment.
