Class of Housing/Services: homeless shelter for women and children

General Information:
Faith Community Outreach Center (FCOC) in Albany Georgia is a homeless shelter for women and children. It was founded by Janice P. Thompson "as a place where low-income women can obtain the skills necessary to become self-sufficient and productive members of the community". Prior to the founding of the center, the only women's shelter in Albany Georgia was Liberty House for battered women. FCOC has 20 beds that are available for up to 90 days. Residents are cared for as they look for permanent housing and employment. Through its partnership with Albany Technical College, FCOC helps women obtain a GED. FCOC is also in partnership with the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles' Re-entry Partnership Housing Program. FCOC staff members work with residents in the areas of spiritual development, personal development, vocational development, community involvement and independent living preparation. These are the developmental strategies that empower the residents to free themselves from various dependencies.
