Class of Housing/Services: Shelter for women and children up to age 12.

General Information:
Shelter for women and children up to age 12. The vision of The House of Healing board is to provide a stable home for women convicted of non-violent crimes and their children. Raised amid violence and drugs, their children are at great risk for becoming the criminal justice system’s next generation of offenders. The House of Healing aims to end this cycle. This residential program offers a nurturing, loving environment for at least six months while the women learn, work and acquire life and parenting skills. This program is designed to deter women from repeat offenses and break the cycle of family crime, violence, and abuse. This ministry empowers women to grow in responsibility and independence, and to make healthy, life-giving choices for the future. The House of Healing serves a maximum of eight women with their children and/or women who are pregnant. Women must be 18 years of age or older and may have up to three small children dependents live with her. Children age 12 and older must live with other family members or guardians. During this site visit, only five women and their children were in residence. The women are non-violent offenders recommended chiefly by the court or other criminal justice system entities as appropriate candidates for this alternative residential experience. The women are either on probation from prison or on parole. The program is designed for a six months’ residency with possibility for up to one year. Those recommended must complete an application and interview with the program director prior to admission.
