Class of Housing/Services: transitional housing and alcohol/drug treatment assistance to women.

General Information:
Provides transitional housing and alcohol/drug treatment assistance to women. If you are a woman, with or without children, and is in need of assistance; please contact the YWCA Sara McKnight Transitional Living Center as soon as possible.  The TLC almost always has a waiting list. It is important for applicant's to be on the waiting list as openings can occur unexpectedly. The Sara McKnight Transitional Living Center provides housing for 39 homeless women with or without children for up to 24 months. Program participants receive case management, job development,  life-skills classes, day-care, transportation, individual and group therapy for women and children, and advocacy.  The Center is staffed 24 hours per day. TLC provides an immediate impact by lowering the number of homeless women and children in El Paso.  Our program provides the foundation upon which women may increase their asset capacity and this empowers them economically.  Through the jobs and job skills that they gain while in the program, our participants can begin to build a life towards self-sufficiency.  The impact of this is substantial because it is often life altering when a family is given the financial tools to move away from a life of poverty.  Single mothers account for the largest percentage of families living below the poverty line in the United States, and the fastest growing segment of the homeless population is women with children. Providing housing for these families increases the probability that they can achieve self-sufficiency. Participants in the program reap many other benefits.  Homeless women are often the victims of domestic violence and/or they have suffered many forms of abuse throughout their lives.  TLC helps to heal some of these wounds by providing a positive, and safe, atmosphere for growth and change. A skill that often deteriorates in homeless people is their social skills.  The community living environment at TLC helps the women and children to interact with other participants and gives them the chance to re-connect with the social aspect of life.
