General Information:
Harbor Haus is a 20-bed facility that provides housing for domestic violence victims in Cullman County. Harbor Haus is accredited through the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Each year Harbor Haus provides shelter and supportive services to over 100 families and individuals. The shelter provides a safe haven for victims of family violence who are being physically, sexually, or emotionally abused and have no safe place to go. Services are provided to residents of Cullman county, however, victims from other counties and out-of-state are admitted when space is available, and on a case-by-case basis. While we do allow time to heal and recover from the major trauma that brings to Harbor Haus, they soon will begin working with staff to develop a workable case plan for their future independence and safety. Harbor Haus features 8-bedrooms, 1-large family room, which can be transformed to suit the needs of the family. While individuals or families are in shelter, staff try to meet all their basic needs. We are able to assist with clothing, toiletries, and other basic needs items. Harbor Haus has a fully stocked kitchen where residents can prepare their meals. In addition, we offer access to a laundry facility, which is stocked with washing detergent and bleach for their use. There are two central living areas where residents can watch television and socialize. For the children's amusement, there is a indoor play room and an outdoor playground. Families has access to services such as individual counseling session, support group meetings, court advocacy, child advocacy, and much more. As families feel safe and ready to move on, case managers are available to help find a place to live, find a job, or give additional resources. As families leave Harbor Haus, they can opt-in to have outreach services, which include case management, advocacy, counseling, and support group meetings, etc. Where are you located? The locations of The Shelter's program-related facilities are kept confidential for the safety of our program participants, volunteers and staff. We offer services in Cullman County. If your locations are confidential, how do people find out about you? Although our locations are confidential, we make every effort to let people know who we are and what we do. We work with local medical professionals, hairstylists, veterinarians, the Cullman County & City School District, Cullman County Sheriff's Office, local police departments, religious organizations and civic clubs to ensure community leaders have our information to share with those in need. Through our Speaker's Bureau, community presentations, media coverage, our website, and other venues, we raise awareness in the community so family, friends and coworkers can share what they know about us with loved ones. Victims of abuse come to us through a concerned friend or family member; escorted by law enforcement; after calling our confidential 24-hour crisis line (256-734-6100); walking up to our facilities. Some come prepared with their "escape bag" while others arrive empty handed. Are you available nights and weekends? The Shelter's confidential 24-hour crisis line (256.734.6100) and emergency shelter are accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Call 911 if in immediate danger. Unauthorized persons are not permitted on the grounds for the safety of those in our residential shelter. The administrative offices are staffed Monday through Friday only, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please call for more information: 256-775-2600. Do you provide medical care? Our emergency shelter staff is CPR certified and trained in basic first aid, but The Shelter does not provide medical care. However, through an extensive referral service we link program participants to medical and legal professionals, other social service agencies, job opportunities and more. Do you serve men? Yes! The Shelter is here to serve all victims of family abuse, intimate partner violence, elder abuse and dating violence no matter their gender, age, race, socioeconomic class or even species (we do have an on-site kennel for pets). We serve men, (and accept them into Harbor Haus), women and children affected by domestic abuse. Additionally, we offer specific programs tailored to meet the needs of children, teens, adults, elders and special populations. What should I bring? Bring Some Clothes if you can, Important Paperwork like ID's, Birth Certificates, etc. Please remember that this is communal living, so 1 bag per person should be sufficient. What kind of transportation do you offer? Harbor Haus offers limited transportation to residents to DHR appointments, court appearances, and medical appointments. This is on a case-by-case basis. C.A.R.T.S. is public transportation that is offered with a 24-hour notice. Does Harbor Haus provide childcare? We provide limited childcare for residents to attend interviews, court appearances, counseling sessions, and support services. However, this limited to the hours when we have a children's advocate on staff. Childcare is offered to outreach clients, while they attend support group meetings. We work with community daycare to assist you in your childcare search. Does Harbor Haus provide food? We offer food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. While breakfast and lunch are on your own, a resident is assigned to prepare dinner meals. There is always snacks, soups, and fresh fruits and vegetables on hand. Can I leave the shelter at anytime? Your decision to enter our program should be voluntary. You are free to exit our program at anytime. You are free to leave shelter to go to work, school, run errands, etc. However, there is a curfew in place for safety purposes. You may visit friends and family anytime you want. However, we ask that you meet them in a location that is separate from our shelter.
