Class of Housing/Services: Transitional Housing, Emergency Shelter

General Information:
Friends of the Family is a private, non-profit victim advocacy agency serving Northeast Iowa. Friends of the Family provides emergency safe shelter for persons affected by domestic violence and sexual assault in 14 counties (Allamakee, Benton, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Chickasaw, Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Howard, Linn, Jones, and Winneshiek) in NE Iowa, and transitional housing and permanent supportive housing for homeless families and individuals in 9 counties of NE Iowa. Cedar Valley Friends of the Family also provides violence prevention education to students and community groups in Bremer, Butler, and Chickasaw Counties in Iowa.   Friends’ House Emergency Safe Shelter: This 21 bed shelter is housed in a confidential location and is staffed 24/7 with certified victim advocates. The shelter is secured with coded doors and an advanced security system. Women and children fleeing domestic or sexual violence are eligible for up to 30 days in Friends’ House Shelter. Those staying in Friends’ House receive crisis counseling, safety planning, case management, and other supportive services. Refuge in other confidential locations: Victims/survivors whose immediate safety is at-risk due to domestic violence or sexual assault may be eligible for CVFF to make arrangements for a safe place to stay, other than our shelter. Those utilizing this service will receive case management from certified victim advocates of CVFF and will be assisted in obtaining resources necessary to achieve safety and self-sufficiency following an abusive experience. Rapid Re-housing and Homeless Prevention: Victims/survivors who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless due to domestic violence or sexual assault and meet certain additional criteria may be eligible for financial assistance and supportive services to either remain in their current home, or to enter into a new home in their community of choice within our 14 county service area. Participants receive case management and budgeting support to assure that housing is maintained.

Transitional housing is affordable supportive housing designed to provide housing and appropriate support services to persons who are homeless or who are close to homelessness. The transition is to help them be more self sufficient to move towards independent living on their own. Transitional housing locations are oftentimes called Halfway Houses. The naming of the two (Halfway House OR Transitional House) is oftentimes interchangeable.

Many Transitional Housing programs are subsidized and are income based. Income based transitional housing generally charges 30% of your income for rent when you do have income. Contact the transitional housing facility to see if this applies.

Services provided at transitional housing facilities varies from substance abuse treatment, to psychological assistance, job training, domestic violence assistance, etc. The assistance provided varies, but it is generally affordable and low cost housing. Read the descriptions of each of the transitional living locations for more detailed information. Transitional housing facilities also may or may not assist with alcohol and/or drug substance abuse treatment.Supportive Housing Programs that provide an alternative living arrangement for individuals who, because of age, disability, substance abuse, mental illness, chronic homelessness or other circumstances, are unable to live independently without care, supervision and/or support to help them in the activities of daily living; or who need access to case management, housing support, vocational, employment and other services to transition to independent living.
