General Information:
Stepping Stones has two primary programs. The emergency/assessment shelter program is the one most people know. The shelter serves up to 6 families at any one time, providing a variety of support services. The other is our Hope Housing program, where we provide permanent housing with additional support for two families with disabled heads of household. Below is more specific information on each program. Emergency/Assessment  Shelter Program. Stepping Stones has been providing emergency shelter services for homeless families since 1979. In October 2009, we joined with the County to change our emergency shelter into an emergency/assessment shelter, in support of efforts to rapidly place homeless families in housing. Stepping Stones can house up to 6 families at a time, and serves any configuration of homeless families with children including, but not limited to, single mothers or single fathers with children, two-parent families with children and grandparents raising their grandchildren.  The Shelter provides food, clothing, shelter, support services, and educational programming (focus on housing, employment, and financial literacy) for these families while they are at the Shelter. Two case managers refer families to needed services, and work with them to come up with housing, income and employment solutions. Employment counselors offer residents one-on-one support with job prospecting, resume writing, and GED tutoring. Children have access to activities and tutors from Montgomery County Public Schools assist with homework. Items donated by the community are available to families while they reside at the shelter, and even after they leave! Our wonderful volunteers provide daily assistance with a variety of services. Hope Housing Program. Hope Housing is a collaborative effort with the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless to provide permanent supportive housing for two families in which the head of household has a documented disability.  Stepping Stones Shelter provides housing and intensive, on-going support services for the families in the program who would be unable to live independently without such assistance.
