Class of Housing/Services: For Women - Transitional Housing, Addiction Recover, Low Income Apartments.

General Information:
DWC is prepared to tackle the problems of homelessness and addiction in our community:     Abba House and Haven House recovery programs are making a big difference in the lives of homeless women in recovery and their children     The Transitional Housing Program offers case management to families and individuals as they begin working toward self sufficiency in housing situations.     The Meridian apartments are a positive choice for low-income individuals including the elderly the handicapped and the disabled.     Our retail stores offer on the job training and employment for a segment of society that is considered ‘unemployable by many.     Our case managers work closely wih Texas Panhandle Centers ( TPC ) to meet the emotional and mental health needs of our clients. Transitional Housing DWC provides the case management for the Transitional Housing Program while the City of Amarillo provides the rental assistance.  All of the families participating are considered homeless up to completion of the two-year program.  Homes or apartments are located throughout the city and the rent is based upon income and the number of persons in the family.  All participants are required to attend a monthly group meeting and in-office meeting with the case manager.  The case manager also conducts one home visit to each family per month.  People entering the Transitional Housing program must currently be living in a homeless shelter with the referral coming from such.  Upon successfully completing the program participants qualify for Section 8 (HUD) housing. Meridian Apartments Meridian Apartments is a 34-unit complex providing quality, affordable housing for low-income individuals.  Many graduates of DWC’s Recovery Program choose to move to Meridian Apartments.  Meridian Apartments is a positive living environment for anyone that meets the income qualifications. It is an equal opprotunity housing facility. There is a food panty located at the Meridian Apartments for residents in need. DWC offers social services counseling to any resident upon request.

Helpful Definitions For Downtown Women's Center:
Transitional housing is affordable supportive housing designed to provide housing and appropriate support services to persons who are homeless or who are close to homelessness. The transition is to help them be more self sufficient to move towards independent living on their own. Transitional housing locations are oftentimes called Halfway Houses. The naming of the two (Halfway House OR Transitional House) is oftentimes interchangeable.

Many Transitional Housing programs are subsidized and are income based. Income based transitional housing generally charges 30% of your income for rent when you do have income. Contact the transitional housing facility to see if this applies.

Services provided at transitional housing facilities varies from substance abuse treatment, to psychological assistance, job training, domestic violence assistance, etc. The assistance provided varies, but it is generally affordable and low cost housing. Read the descriptions of each of the transitional living locations for more detailed information. Transitional housing facilities also may or may not assist with alcohol and/or drug substance abuse treatment.Emergency Homeless Shelters both provide short term relief for the homeless and low income persons. Usually there is a maximum stay of 3 months or less. Many of these shelters ask their clients to leave during the day. Meals and other supportive services are often offered. 3 times out of 5 these shelters offer their services free of charge.
