Nehemiah House
Men's Ministry The Nehemiah House reaches out to the homeless, addicted and disadvantaged men of Central Arkansas compassion of Christ. Housing, counseling, daily chapel services and our programs begin to help change lives. Those who are struggling with chemical dependency and other addictions find hope and support to break the shackles of their addictions and begin to rebuild their lives through a relationship with Jesus Christ. We offer three programs at the Nehemiah House, which are described below. Men's Recovery Program “So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.” (Col. 1:9-10 NLT) The foundation of the rehab program is evangelism. Our goal is to expose each resident to the clear proclamation of the gospel and to challenge him to make a specific commitment to Jesus Christ as both Savior and Lord. Just as evangelism is the foundation of our program, discipleship is the focus. Our goal for the men who respond is to bring them under the training and discipline of Jesus Christ. Using the Bible as our guide, we seek to help men identify sinful patterns of behavior and turn to God for restoration and transformation. Their efforts at change are reinforced through the discipline of adhering to program rules, work therapy, formal instruction, support group interaction, in-depth Bible study, counseling and prayer. Each area is specifically designed to provide the tools, mentally and spiritually, to live a clean and sober life that is rooted in the ways of the Lord. Program Summary & Course Description Phase 1 (2 weeks – Foundations of Christianity) Men who are initially accepted into the Union Rescue Mission Men’s Rehabilitation Program will begin a proven journey toward a new life. “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” II Cor. 5:17 NLT. Men will become a member of the family. We define family here as a group of individuals brought together by their unified needs and shared goals. Within this context they will learn the values of fellowship, unconditional love, and mutual support in the discovery of abundant life. Phase 1 focuses on building a Christian foundation for life based on a relationship with Jesus. The key areas of focus for the first classes are the Bible, authentication of the Bible, who God is, who Christ is, and how to have true relationship with Jesus. Phase 2 (3 months – Conquering Chemical Dependency) These 90 days are dedicated to working a Christ centered 12 step program. Using a proven Biblical program prepared by Robert S. McGee, the men will learn how to get a grip on their addictions and not let the addictions have a grip on them. These 12 steps take the men on a journey of self-examination, and teach them how to conquer their addictions and ultimately restore those things they destroyed in their paths. Instruction is designed to promote a spiritual perspective of the problems of chemical dependency and interpersonal relationships. Counseling and spiritually focused support groups aid residents through their process of change. Residents will attend morning and evening classes/services while in the program as well as local church services. Phase 3 (4 months – Discipleship) Phase 3, the final phase of the rehab program is for men who have clearly made a commitment to Christ and would benefit from the additional discipline and instruction that a period of personal discipleship would offer. Discipleship will help men to deepen their relationship with God. Discipleship will also help increase self-awareness, self-esteem and a man’s ability to live a joyful life free from addiction. The continued course work and added responsibility (serving new men entering the program) will give members time to practice their walk while developing a solid outside support network. The focus of this phase is on spiritual formation, leadership, evangelism, continuation of recovery work, relapse prevention, budgeting, resume’ preparation, interviewing and beginning preparations near the end of this phase for transition back into society. Men who have honored their commitment to God, worked the 12 step program, and grown through the Discipleship phase will be allowed to graduate the rehab program.
