The New Life Center, located in Opelousas, provides emergency shelter, transitional housing and supportive services for up to 51 homeless women and 58 children per night. The New Life CEnter also provides emergency and transitional housing for homeless femal veterans, with our without children.
Residents are provided with shelter and services for up to two years while working towards self-sufficiency. All residents participate in case management where they are assisted with applying for mainstream benefits, entering school, obtaining employment and permanent housing.
Residents also participate in life skills sessions, job counseling and are referred to outside agencies for additional counseling. The residents have access to case management services for an additional six months after they leave the center. A chemical dependency program is also available for those women recovering from alcohol and/or drug addictions. This program provides addiction education support groups and case management.
Transitional housing is affordable supportive housing designed to provide housing and appropriate support services to persons who are homeless or who are close to homelessnessness. The transition is to help them be more self sufficience to move towards independent living on their own. Transitional housing locations are oftentimes called Halfway Houses. The naming of the two (Halfway House OR Transitional House) is oftentimes interchangeable.
Many Transitional Housing programs are subsidized and are income based. Income based transitional housing generally charges 30% of your income for rent when you do have income. Contact the transitional housing facility to see if this applies.
Services provided at transitional housing facilities varies from substance abuse treatment, to psychological assistance, job training, domestic violence assistance, etc. The assistance provided varies, but it is generally affordable and low cost housing. Read the descriptions of each of the transitional living locations for more detailed information. Transitional housing facilities also may or may not assist with alcohol and/or drug substance abuse treatment.
