General Information:
The CHUM Center is a day shelter offering a safe, chemical-free environment to more than 100 homeless and low-income people per day.  Many live with chemical dependency or mental health issues. The Center is open seven days a week from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. The CHUM Center provides shower and laundry facilities, a mailing address, local phone use and message service, storage lockers, free coffee and snacks, meals on days when other local feeding programs are closed, a community room for visiting or quiet relaxation, and recreational opportunities. Nurse Clinic The Nurse Clinic, staffed by a Registered Nurse 20 hours per week, provides basic health screenings, referrals to community health providers, and health education. The nurse consults with clients on their health concerns, and helps them establish a relationship with a primary-care physician, manage their medication, and make their medication co-pays. Through a relationship between the University of Minnesota Duluth Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy, CHUM hosts the HOPE CLINIC for CHUM clients without medical insurance. Staffed for three hours each week by pharmacy and medical students with oversight by medical school physician-instructors, the clinic provides a limited number of patients with one office visit per year. Street Case Management CHUM's outreach workers make contact with individuals recognized by Duluth police officers and CHUM staff as long-term homeless and chemically addicted. Because traditional approaches to the treatment of substance abuse have often failed in these cases, the outreach workers use a "harm-reduction model" that recognizes that chronically homeless and addicted clients are unlikely to maintain abstinence. This harm reduction approach seeks to reduce the negative effects of substance abuse, especially homelessness and malnutrition. CHUM's Outreach Advocates provide one-on-one and group support to the chronically homeless. The initial goal is to help these clients find housing and improve their nutrition. In the long term, the advocates seek to help people assess their lives and increase their self-sufficiency.
