General Information:
We are a not-for-profit (501c-3) organization committed to providing transitional housing and supportive services to the homeless, distressed and underserved population of New York City. Services Housing A safe, clean, drug and alcohol-free living environment provides residents with private and semi-private rooms as well as a nourishing breakfast five days each week. Other facilities include a communal kitchen where residents can prepare meals, on-site laundry facilities, a Common Room as well as a courtyard where residents can socialize. House meetings are held regularly for residents and staff to address any concerns within the building. Life Skills An on-site Life Skills Center with four computers provides training in computer skills, preparing resumes, preparing for and keeping a job, education in financial literacy, healthy living, and other life skills. Residents have their own email accounts and access to the Internet. Employment Assistance The MOD staff helps residents through every aspect of the job search. This includes scanning job listings, resume and cover letter development, mock job interviews and collecting letters of reference. Entitlements Eligible residents are assisted with obtaining Social Security Income, Social Security Disability, Public Assistance and Veteran benefits. Transitional Housing Support MOD's staff provides the following services: Referrals for affordable apartments, and where appropriate, for assisted living facilities and nursing homes     Assistance with various applications for housing programs     Letter-writing, copying, faxing, mailing applications, and mock housing interviews Medical and Mental Health The nearby Karpas Health Information Center makes available baseline testing for residents and offers classes in many aspects of wellness. Volunteer Nursing groups also organize health fairs for residents. Referrals are also made to local providers. Outpatient, inpatient, and long-term treatment referrals for substance abuse programs are provided. Special Events for Residents Special dinners and cookouts celebrate holidays. These and other activities are hosted by MOD staff, visiting youth groups, and church groups. Movies, bingo, games, and community events are available for residents. Escorts MOD staff is available to accompany residents on medical, mental health and social service appointments, as well as to housing interviews. General Advocacy Residents are afforded Fair Hearing support, Adult Protective Services and professional assistance. Pastoral Counseling One-on-one and group counseling is offered by Moravian church pastors.
